Five Kenyan police officers were killed while eight others sustained serious injuries after suspected Al-shabab militants carried out an ambush in Rakei settlement in Boni Forest in Lamu region.

This was confirmed by Lamu police chief, Wesley Koech.

Initial reports say that more than 70 Al-Shabab militants tried to cross the border between Bodhei and Lamu while passing through Garissa, but encountered Kenya’s Special Operations Group.

Armed clashes ensued between Kenya’s security forces and suspected Al-Shabab militants.

Five Kenyan soldiers were killed while those wounded in the attack were taken to Nairobi to receive further medical treatments.

The attack took place in an area that lies 3 km from Lamu.

Lamu police chief said that the objective of the militant group of Al-Shabab was to move into the border so as to carry out deadly terra attacks.

The attack came months after suspected Al-Shabab militants conducted an investigation into parts of the Lamu settlement.

Local residents told that it was part of the militant group’s plans in which they intended to conduct attacks there.
