Somali troops capture strategic town in Central Somalia

The Somali National Army (SNA), backed by Galmudug Dervish forces and local clan militia fighters on Friday captured a strategic town of Ba’adweyne in Central Mudug region.

The offensive which the Somali troops launched against Alshabab fighters stationed in Ba’adweyne, is part of an ongoing operations that are aimed to bolster security and eliminate terrorist organizations in Central Somalia.

SNA Commanders who led the offensive said that the operation targeted members of Alshabab fighters who were regrouping in the area.

According to the Commanders, the Somali troops inflicted heavy casualties on Alshabab fighters, but did not specify the exact number of Alshabab soldiers killed during the offensive.

According to reliable sources, fierce fighting is underway between gov’t troops and Alshabab fighters.

Initial reports indicate that the allied forces successfully took over most parts of the town.

The exact number of casualties are not known but military officials said several Alshabab fighters were killed during the offensive.
