Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in New York on Tuesday.
The meeting took place during the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, as stated by the Pakistani Prime Minister on his social media account.
A statement from Villa Somalia indicated that the President held sideline meetings in New York with the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić; the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye; the President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa; and the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
“The meetings focused on strengthening relations and cooperation between Somalia and these nations, as well as issues concerning peace, security, development, and shared interests,” the statement read.
The statement added, “The President shared with the officials he met the progress and achievements Somalia has realized in peace and security, state-building, democratization, the economy, and the development of social services, while also discussing opportunities for cooperation between Somalia and these countries.”
A new chapter has opened in the cooperative relationship between Somalia and Pakistan regarding defense and security, following the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two governments in Islamabad last August. This agreement supports Somalia in building military capacity, as well as maritime and air security.
