Somaliland’s National Election Commission (NEC) announced the schedule for the upcoming
political organization polls as well as the presidential polls.
Political association elections will be held on 28th December, 2023 while the presidential polls slated to be held in 13th November, 2024.
National Election Commission said in an official statement that political organizations elections will precede the presidential polls.
a statement from NEC said: ” NEC decided that political association polls will be held on 28th December this year in order to have three national political parties that are valid. The would be three national political parties will get licenses from the National Electoral Commission once they contest in the elections.”
NEC further noted that the presidential elections will be held in 2024 while the two year term extension for the incumbent president of Somaliland by the House of Elders will expire in 2024.
A statement from NEC said: ” NEC decided that the presidential polls and deputy president will be held in one month prior to the term expire of the the president’s term in office. This is in line with the article 83 of page 2 of the country’s national constitution. The presidential polls will take place on 13th November, 2024.”
NEC appealed the House of representatives to complete election laws. It also sent an appeal to election stakeholders to work with NEC on the success of Somaliland elections.
