Ministry of Energy and Minerals Signs Major Contract for World Bank-Funded 12MW Solar Power Project in Berbera

A formal contract signing ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals of Somaliland, attended by senior officials including Minister Eng. Ahmed Jama Barre, Director General Dr. Shucayb Osman Mahmoud, Energy Commission Director General Mohamed Mahmoud Abdi (Malow), leadership of Berbera’s electricity company, the SESRP project implementation team, and the successful contractor.

The contract for the electricity expansion project in Berbera was officially signed. The project, whose foundation stone was earlier laid by Somaliland President Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), includes a 12MWp Solar PV Power Plant, a 36MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and 13.5 kilometers of power transmission lines.

Financed by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, the project aims to deliver affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity from clean energy sources to the residents of Berbera, promising significant socio-economic transformation for the city.

During the event, Minister Eng. Ahmed Jama Barre and the Director General urged the contractor to maintain the highest quality standards and complete the work within the stipulated timeframe, emphasizing that reliable electricity will attract both local and international investments to Berbera.

The successful contractor pledged to uphold quality and deliver the project on schedule to ensure the people of Berbera receive clean, affordable, and dependable power from environmentally friendly sources.
