The Somali Special Forces known as Gorgor Commandos of the Somali National Army established new military positions in Sumadaale area in Middle Shabelle province after they successfully dislodged Al-Shabab militants from the area last Tuesday.

The Ministry of Defense said Tuesday that the Somali troops destroyed Al-Shabab positions and underground caves in the area following their successful removal from the area.

The Somali National Army still continues to carry out operations which are aimed at ensuring the security in the area while they relentlessly pursue Al-Shabab fighters and Commanders who are on the run.

The Somali National Army specifically the 9th Unit and the 18th Brigade of Gorgor Commandos set up military positions on the outskirts of Sumadaale area which fall under the jurisdiction of Adale District in order to protect the security of these areas and districts in Hirshabelle state where one-person one-vote is due to take place.

The Commander of the 18th Brigade, particularly the 1st Division of Gorgor Commandos, Colonel Adan Mohamed Farah, demonstrated that the troops will remain in the area if they obtain information about the presence of Al-Shabab militants.

The Commander further called on the public to withstand the enemy and at the same time, cooperate with the National Army.

Operations are ongoing in Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions where the Somali National Army is putting military pressure on Al-Shabab militants so that the militants will not disrupt the upcoming elections where the public will elect members of the parliament and local councilors in Hirshabelle districts.

Al-Shabab militants took control of Sumadaale area in March of last year. This was the time when Al-Shabab launched unprecedented attacks in the eastern part of Middle Shabelle region in February which continued until April of that year.

Local residents were surprised after Al-Shabab seized the districts of El-Baraf, Alkowsar, Adan Yabaal, as well as numerous other settlements in the eastern part of the region.
