First Qatari flood relief arrives in Somalia

The first consignment of relief items sent by Qatar to help flood victims in the affected areas of Somalia has arrived in Mogadishu.

Under the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), in co-operation with the Standing Committee for Rescue and Relief Works and Humanitarian Aids, dispatched the first planeload of assistance to flood victims in the affected areas of Somalia.

The aid included 42 tonnes of relief and medical supplies.

HE the the Director General of QFFD Khalifa bin Jassim al-Kuwari, and Qatari ambassador to Somalia Hassan bin Hamza Hashem, and Search and Rescue team of Lekhwiya escorted the relief items.

The Qatari delegation and relief materials were received by members of the Flood Relief Committee appointed by the prime minister of Somalia, as well as Somali government’s ministers and MPs.

The Director General of QFFD said at a joint press conference with the Somali Federal Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Hamza Said Hamza that this is the first batch of Qatari relief items, and that another batch is being processed. He emphasised that Qatar stands with Somalia in the crisis.

The Somali federal minister of humanitarian affairs and disaster management thanked Qatar’s for its prominent role in helping the flood victims in Somalia, adding that the generous support from Qatar is dedicated to the flood zones such as Beledweyne in Hirshabelle State, El Bardale in the state of Southwest of Somalia, and Bardera in Jubaland state.

He praised the continued support of Qatar to the people and government of Somalia.
