On 19th July, Djibouti Shipping Company’s first ship, M/V African Sun, arrived in Djibouti, during a ceremony under the high patronage of President Ismail Omar Guelleh. The use of this ship will significantly reduce transit time for merchandise travelling from Turkey to the region – transit times from Turkey to Djibouti will reduce from 30 days to 9 days, while transit times from Turkey to Mogadishu will reduce from 40 days to 20 days. The ship will be making regular trips from the Port of Mersin in Turkey to Mogadishu, via Djibouti, Berbera and Bossaso.

Djibouti also received M/V Spar Capella on 17 July at Tadjourah Port, carrying 50,000 tons of coal destined for Ethiopia. The arrival of the ship is the first major use of the recently inaugurated Tadjourah-Bahlo road corridor, a third road corridor between Ethiopia and Djibouti. Djibouti’s ports play a vital role in Ethiopian trade and this new road link will strengthen regional connectivity.

We look forward to working with regional partners to enhance integration and facilitate a strong economic recovery.
