The UK’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mr. Darren Welch, has expressed support for the ongoing progress being made at the port in Berbera. He also endorsed the implementation of a trade deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland, as previously announced by Somaliland President, Mr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Irro. In an interview with local media in Ethiopia, Welch was asked about Ethiopia’s efforts to gain access to the sea. He responded by stating his support for the progress at Berbera port and the potential trade deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland. Welch stated, “I understand that Ethiopia is expanding in terms of trade and population and needs to use various trade ports. The UK government fully supports the activities at Berbera port and the potential trade deal, which will facilitate the movement of goods between Berbera and Ethiopia.” He also mentioned that he comes from a country with hundreds of ports and understands the importance of access to the sea for a landlocked country. Welch also called for Ethiopia and other regional governments to exercise maximum restraint and work towards a peaceful resolution of any conflicts. He emphasized the need for cooperation in the region and stated that Addis Ababa should pursue its goals peacefully. He said, “We believe that the situation must be calmed down and resolved through dialogue.” When asked about the importance of Ethiopia having access to the sea, Welch responded, “Aside from the need for Ethiopia to do business with the rest of the world, it is also crucial to strengthen trade with other African countries.” In a separate interview with CNN Business Arabic, Somaliland President, Mr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Irro, announced that a new trade deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland will soon be finalized. He stated, “We are currently engaged with Ethiopia on a trade deal and I am hopeful that it will be finalized soon.
