The President of Somalia, H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has accused neighboring countries, although he did not specifically mention their names, of benefiting from Israel’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland to achieve their own interests. In an interview with Alsharq al-Awsat Arabic newspaper, based in London, the Somali President stated that certain countries are exploiting this opportunity for their own short-term gains, which will undermine the unity of Somalia and stability in the region. He did not want to name these countries, but added that they see the recognition of Israel by Somaliland as a way to gain limited benefits. Ethiopia and Kenya have not publicly stated their stance on the recognition of Israel by Somaliland. However, Ethiopia and Somalia have had a dispute over a controversial deal with Somaliland two years ago. The Somali President emphasized that the unity and sovereignty of Somalia are red lines, and his government will use all necessary political means to protect them. Although Somaliland declared its independence 30 years ago, only two countries have officially recognized it: Israel and Taiwan.
