Mogadishu—The State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Hon. Ali Omar Bal’ad, has stated that Somalia will adapt to the worsening economic situation after the US State Department suspended foreign aid earmarked for the country. He argued that there are strategic interests that are forcing the US to remain in Somalia, specifically in cooperation with the fight against terrorist organizations like Al-Shabab and ISIS. He said, “I have recognized the change. We are trying to adapt to it. The suspension of foreign aid is not only affecting Somalia, but it also represents a wider review of foreign aid.” Washington has tightened its policy on foreign aid, putting many programs on hold for review and reorganization. These changes will have a negative impact on Somalia, particularly in terms of foreign aid, which has been crucial in providing humanitarian aid and other development services. Earlier this month, the US State Department announced a temporary halt on foreign aid earmarked for the Somali government after accusing government officials of deliberately demolishing a World Food Program warehouse and diverting food aid.
