Mogadishu–-The Minister of Defense of Somalia, Hon. Ahmed Ma’alin Fiqi, has announced a historic victory for the Somali National Army (SNA) against Al-Shabab fighters who recently expanded their presence in Jabad Godane settlement in the Middle Shabelle Region. After two weeks of intense fighting, the SNA has effectively eliminated the Al-Shabab fighters who were hiding in Jabad Godane. The Minister also acknowledged the support of international partners who provided air support through airstrikes during the fighting. In a press conference held in Mogadishu on Monday, the Minister stated that an estimated 120 to 150 Al-Shabab fighters were killed in the clashes, including senior leaders who were leading the attack. He also revealed that 50 Al-Shabab fighters were killed in the clashes that took place the previous night and continued into the afternoon. Additionally, over 200 Al-Shabab fighters were injured. The Minister praised the bravery of the Somali National Army and credited them for eliminating the Al-Shabab fighters who launched the attack. He also emphasized that the Somali government stands behind the National Army and their efforts to defend the country. The Minister highlighted that this victory is not just a military one, but it also sends a clear message to those who seek to cause insecurity and undermine the unity and sovereignty of Somalia. He reiterated that Al-Shabab will not find a safe haven in Somalia and that the fighting will continue until their extremist ideology is eliminated. The Minister also announced that the bodies of the Al-Shabab fighters killed in the fighting will be presented on Tuesday. He confirmed that the terrorist group has been driven out of Jabad Godane and that the Somali Army has chased the escapees to the outskirts of Hawadley. He expressed gratitude to international partners, specifically the US and Turkey, for their air support during the ground offensives against Al-Shabab.
