The Foundation Stone for the first phase of the road linking Borama and Lawyo Addo townships will soon be laid, with construction set to begin shortly after. This 280 km road, funded by the African Development Bank, will provide a vital connection between the two townships. In addition, the African Development Bank is currently conducting a feasibility study for another important highway that links Buroa, Odweyne, and Hargeisa. In an interview with MM Somali TV in Hargeisa, Hon. Abdilahi Ibrahim, the Head of the project for the African Development Bank, confirmed these plans and also announced that construction on the highway linking Djibouti and Somaliland will begin soon. The first phase of this project will start in Zeila and connect to Lawyo Addo townships, with a second phase planned to link Zeila and Asho Addo. These are the first two phases of the project, with a feasibility study currently underway for a 190 km road linking Hargeisa, Odweyne, and Buroa. The African Development Bank has signed a deal with Somaliland’s Ministry of Finance to oversee the project, with the Ministry of Transport and Road Development responsible for implementation and the Roads Development Authority in charge of construction. The feasibility study for the road linking Lawyo Addo and Borama townships began in 2020 and is expected to be completed by 2023. This study will provide important information on the climate, economy, and viability of the project, as well as details on the highway design and permitted vehicles.
