The security situation in Baidoa is deteriorating due to increasing defections from regional security forces and escalating political tensions between the regional administration and Somalia’s federal government. According to local sources, there has been a rise in defections from the Southwest State of Somalia security forces in recent days, affecting several districts surrounding Baidoa, including Buur Hakaba, Qansaxdheere, and Berdale. The opposition-aligned fighters are gaining strength as more personnel defect from government forces, and they have reportedly acquired additional weapons such as AK-47 rifles and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). There are also reports of discussions among opposition figures to move towards Baidoa with the aim of removing the regional president, whose mandate they claim has expired. These security developments are occurring amidst a growing political rift between the regional administration and the Federal Government of Somalia. In a sign of deepening mistrust, Southwest authorities have expelled officials from the National Independent Electoral Commission of Somalia from Baidoa. Regional officials have also accused the federal government of supporting militias involved in the unrest, an allegation that has not been publicly addressed by federal authorities. With armed groups regrouping on the outskirts of Baidoa and political tensions escalating, the situation remains highly volatile, causing concern among residents and observers about the potential for further conflict in the coming days.
