The President of Southwest State, Mr. Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed, also known as Laftagaren, has officially announced his resignation from the political party led by Somali Federal President, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, where he served as Deputy Chairperson. This decision comes amidst increasing political tensions between Southwest State and the Somali Federal Government. While the reasons for his resignation have not been disclosed, Laftagaren has made it clear that his stance on constitutional issues and politics in the country played a role in his decision. Previously, the President of Southwest State stated that Somalia has one constitution, which was approved in 2012. He emphasized that any constitutional amendments made without following legal procedures will be considered null and void. He also accused the Somali President and his government of taking actions that could jeopardize the unity of the country. He specifically mentioned their involvement in creating unrecognized militias, which could lead to insecurity in Southwest State. He called on the Somali President to convene an emergency meeting with members of the National Council, which he had previously disbanded in order to consult on the upcoming elections. He stressed the importance of holding this meeting in a neutral and secure location before April 14th.
