Southwest State President, Mr. Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed, also known as Laftagaren, has recently released an official law appointing the Independent and Election Boundaries Commission. This decision was made according to a letter issued by the office of the Presidency. The new law, dated March 23, 2026, appoints members of the electoral Commission, including a Chairperson, deputy Chair, secretary, and other members. These individuals are expected to play a significant role in the preparation and implementation of upcoming elections in Southwest State. The appointment has received political support from some Somali Federal Parliament lawmakers, who have expressed their strong endorsement of the administration’s decision. Among these supporters is former Somali Parliament Speaker, Mr. Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman, who has stated that the creation of the new Electoral Commission is a crucial legal step towards ensuring free and fair elections in the region. Other lawmakers of the Somali Parliament have also expressed their support, citing the Commission’s role in promoting political stability and unifying the community’s diverse opinions towards the upcoming elections.
