Somaliland’s Education Minister Launches Climate Change Revolution in Schools

The Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Somaliland, Prof. Ismail Duale Yusuf, presided over a high-level meeting at his office where a groundbreaking approach to integrate climate change education into Somaliland’s primary and secondary school curriculum was officially presented.

The initiative places special emphasis on the core subjects of Science and Social Studies, aiming to equip young Somalilanders with critical knowledge and awareness about climate change from an early age.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the Director General of the National Curriculum, Mr. Mohamed Abdi Osman, technical experts involved in the project, representatives from the international organization Save the Children, and senior ministry officials.

Mr. Mohamed Abdi Osman kicked off the session with a comprehensive briefing, outlining the different phases of the project — from initial planning through to successful implementation. He extended heartfelt thanks to all partners and contributors who played a role in bringing the initiative to fruition.

The Minister was then handed a detailed final report that highlighted the major achievements, tangible outcomes, and the roadmap for future steps in embedding climate education nationwide.

Prof. Ismail Duale Yusuf warmly commended the team’s efforts, describing the project as a significant milestone. He gave special praise to the Office of Curriculum Development for their dedication and innovation in modernizing the national curriculum and successfully weaving climate change issues into the education system.

This move marks a forward-thinking step by the Somaliland government to prepare the next generation for the realities of a changing climate through formal education.
