Hargeisa– The President of the republic of Somaliland H.E Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi on Monday held a meeting at the presidential palace in Hargeisa with members of the National Election Commission (NEC). This was the first meeting the incumbent president held with NEC members after assuming office of the presidency. Irro thanked NEC members for paying a visit to him. NEC and the president discussed a number of important issues concerning the upcoming parliamentary and local council elections which are scheduled to be held on 31st of May, 2026. NEC briefed the president the ongoing preparations when it comes to holding the elections on time. Members of the Election Commission shared the president with ongoing work when it comes to the review of previous elections. The president called on NEC members to revisit the previous polls and have a look at the mistakes and challenges. He further called on them to rectify errors committed as far as the previous elections are concerned. He reiterated that he will hold the elections on time as he will fulfil campaign promises He said that he is committed to hold the upcoming elections on time. He also pledged to provide the necessary funds in order NEC to hold the elections.
He said that he is keen to reform the voter registration, and informed NEC to prepare the Election Road Map.
