Lawmakers in Somaliland’s House of Representatives have proposed immediate measures to combat the severe drought gripping the region, as millions face acute food insecurity and malnutrition.
Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee, MP Mahamud Hayir Ducale, highlighted the devastating impact of the ongoing drought on communities during a recent session. He emphasized the urgent need for coordinated relief efforts amid failed rains and escalating humanitarian needs.
The committee has put forward several key proposals, including:
- Establishing a special parliamentary committee to assess the drought’s extent and impacts across the region.
- Urging the Somaliland government to significantly increase drought relief funding and operations.
- Encouraging community members and business leaders to boost fundraising and contributions.
- Calling on humanitarian organizations to intensify their aid delivery.
- Developing a comprehensive national plan to mitigate and prevent future droughts.
In his remarks, MP Ducale stated: “That the House of Representatives appoint a special committee to assess the drought situation in the country, that the government increase drought relief, that the community and businessmen increase their fundraising, that humanitarian organizations increase the aid they provide, and that a national plan be developed regarding addressing future droughts.”
