The Minister of Livestock and Rural Development of the Republic of Somaliland, Hon. Omar Shuaib Mohamed, delivered a keynote address at the opening of the Somaliland Livestock Trade and Production Exhibition, organized by his ministry.
In his speech, Minister Omar highlighted that 70% of Somaliland’s livestock are concentrated in the regions of Sool, Sanaag, and Badhan. He emphasized that adopting modern livestock rearing methods in these regions alone would be sufficient to meet the country’s entire production needs.
“Sool, Sanaag, and Badhan hold 70% of Somaliland’s livestock. If modern methods of livestock management are implemented, we believe they alone will be enough to cover all our production,” the minister stated.
He further announced that the Government, under the leadership of President Dr. Abdirahman Irro, has plans to construct a new dedicated port specifically for livestock exports. The minister explained that current quarantine and holding facilities have expanded into or beyond urban areas, forcing livestock to pass through cities during transport.
“The holding facilities have approached the cities or even gone beyond them, and our livestock pass through the middle of the cities. We have planned to soon build a new dedicated port for livestock, and the holding facilities will also be constructed near that port,” he added.
Minister Omar Shuaib also outlined the ministry’s commitment to training programs, stating: “We will teach people modern rearing methods so that they can keep up with the world.”
The exhibition aims to encourage livestock owners and promote the production of animal feed to support sustainable growth in the sector.
