Somaliland government has tasked a committee with investigating the recent violence in Borama, where a group of youngsters were detained by the police for chanting anti-May 18 celebration slogans. While the regional authority claims that not all of the detained individuals are criminals, the number of detainees has surpassed hundreds. Some of the youngsters have already been released after the investigations. Awdal’s regional governor, Mr. Abdirashiid Hassan Matan, spoke to the media today and stated that it is unacceptable for anyone to pose a threat to the security forces and development in the region. He emphasized that those who oppose the region’s development or engage in violent acts, such as burning tires or disrupting public places, will face legal consequences. The security forces are currently conducting operations to find those who may have influenced the youth to engage in violent acts. The regional governor expressed appreciation to the residents, security forces, intellectuals, and parents, and urged them to cooperate with the security forces in maintaining security. He also conveyed messages of support to the regional authorities. The governor called on parents to closely monitor their children’s movements and stated that the committee responsible for the detained individuals is currently in the process of classifying them.
