The Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, strongly opposes the new diplomatic engagement between Israel and Somaliland, and has condemned Somaliland’s plans to open an embassy in Jerusalem. He made these remarks during his speech at the Eid-Al-Adha occasion, stating that the Somali Federal Government will not accept what he described as a project to bring Israel into Somalia. He questioned Israel’s reputation for charity and nation-building, stating that there is no secrecy in the 21st century. He also expressed disappointment in Somaliland’s invitation to Israel, emphasizing that this plan will not be allowed to materialize. The Somali President criticized some Somaliland officials for showing support for Israel, stating that the Somali people are known for practicing the Quran and should not be supporting Israel. He also called on Israel to recognize the state of Palestine and respect the holy city of Jerusalem for Muslims around the world. These remarks come at a time when debates are escalating over the new partnership between Israel and Somaliland, which has sparked reactions from the Somali people both at home and abroad.
