Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has denied reports claiming that Turkey maintains a military base in Somalia where Turkish troops operate on a permanent basis.

Speaking to Al Jazeera Arabic about relations between Somalia and Turkey, Hassan Sheikh stated that the Turkish facility in Somalia is a training center for Somali forces, and it is incorrect to classify it as a Turkish military base.

The President described reports claiming that Turkey has established its first overseas military base in Somalia as “baseless propaganda.” He noted that there are no Turkish troops stationed there to operate a military base.

Hassan Sheikh also described the relationship between Somalia and Turkey as strategic, highlighting Turkey’s role in supporting Somalia—particularly during the 2011 drought and when the country was facing a difficult security situation.

He added that Turkey has invested in Mogadishu’s airport and seaport and is currently working on oil and gas initiatives, as well as other projects within Somalia. The President added that Turkey is also working on the construction of a satellite launch facility, a project he described as important for Somalia and the African continent.
