The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) of Somalia announced that a planned operation in Jilib district resulted in the killing of Bashir Ahmed Haji Nunow, whom it described as a former leader within Al-Shabaab’s security wing.

According to a press release issued by NISA, the operation took place on the night of October 1st and was carried out in collaboration with international partners.

NISA stated that Bashir Nunow had led the department Al-Shabaab refers to as “Amniyat” between 2016 and 2024. The agency also noted that he used the aliases Geescadde, Fanax, Gardhuub, and Ali Dheere.

According to NISA, Nunow played a role in planning and executing attacks carried out by Al-Shabaab within Somalia; the agency specifically cited the October 14, 2017 attack at the Soobe Junction, the attack at Ex-Control Afgoye, the bombing known as “Soobe 2,” and other attacks in Mogadishu. NISA stated that the Jilib operation is part of the agency’s efforts to pursue Al-Shabaab leaders accused of involvement in attacks targeting the Somali people.
