The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) of Somalia announced that 12 Al-Shabaab members were killed during a planned operation in the Buur-Saruur area of the Middle Shabelle region.
NISA stated that the operation took place in Buur-Saruur—located approximately two kilometers southeast of Ali-Gaduud—where the agency had identified the presence of Al-Shabaab members.
According to NISA, the operation also resulted in the destruction of supplies and facilities used by the group for its activities, while forces continue to pursue remaining Al-Shabaab members in the area.
This operation comes as Somali forces have intensified intelligence-led operations against Al-Shabaab in the Middle Shabelle and Hiran regions.
Earlier this month, NISA reported that a senior Al-Shabaab commander and three other fighters were killed in an operation in the Guulane and Al-Furqaan areas.
In August, the agency also announced an operation in the Fiidow area that targeted a house where members of the group were hiding. Additionally, an airstrike in Adan-Yabal in July killed 11 Al-Shabaab leaders—according to officials—including the group’s commander for the Middle Shabelle region.
NISA also stated that, during September, it apprehended 11 individuals suspected of having links to Al-Shabaab in Mogadishu and its surrounding areas.
