Members representing Somalia in the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) were sworn in on Monday in the capital of Tanzania, Arusha. This was announced by Somalia’s Ambassador to Tanzania and the East Africa Community (EAC), Mr. Ilyas Ali Hassan, in a statement. In his statement, the Ambassador congratulated the Somali people on this significant achievement for the Somali Federal Government and the Somali people. He also acknowledged the obstacles that were overcome in order for the members to be dispatched to Arusha. The Ambassador also expressed the government’s commitment to strengthening relations with EAC member states and utilizing the benefits of EAC integration. He stated, “Congratulations! The members representing Somalia in the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) have been sworn in in Arusha. The Somali Federal Government is dedicated to consolidating relations, promoting integration, cooperation, peace, and development within the East Africa Community (EAC) and the entire region.” He also thanked Somali President, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, for his crucial role in strengthening Somalia’s participation in the EAC. The Ambassador continued, “Today is a historic and momentous day. It is a political achievement for the government and the Somali people. I would like to express my gratitude to government officials, especially President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.” Somalia officially joined the EAC at the end of 2023, with the process being approved earlier this year. The country’s bicameral parliament elected nine members to represent Somalia in the EALA, with five men and four women being chosen
