On Wednesday, Kenya’s Counter Terrorism Policing Unit posted an official statement on its Twitter account stating that, in collaboration with Intelligence Agencies, they had foiled a planned terrorist attack in Nairobi allegedly linked to suspected Al-Shabab operatives. The statement from the Counter Terrorism Policing Unit read, “Plans by the terrorist group Al-Shabab to kill many Kenyan people in Nairobi have been foiled.” The police have been conducting operations, surveillance, and gathering secret intelligence reports for months, leading to the busting of a terrorist network operating in the Dhadhaab refugee camp. The CTPU specifically mentioned that their operations resulted in the seizure of 600 rounds of ammunition, hand grenades, explosive devices, and drugs that were intended for specific locations in Nairobi. The CPTU also stated that the terrorist organizations were planning to carry out attacks during the holy month of Ramadan and had also planned to abduct foreign nationals and vehicles. The statement further assured that Nairobi is secure, thanks in part to the brave men and women of the security agencies who worked tirelessly to bust the terrorists and criminals. Mr. Osman Ibrahim, Chairman of the Security Committee in Dhadhaab, told BBC Somali that the weapons were confiscated by the police in an area near the Guurow settlement. He expressed gratitude to the Counter Terrorism and Policing Unit for intercepting the weapons and foiling the planned attacks. He also stated, “The people residing in both Kenya and Somalia are Somalis, but the lack of security in Somalia is what troubles us.”
