Kenya doubles the price of Miraa export to Somalia

The government of Kenya has announced that it has increased the Miraa price that is exported to neighboring country of Somalia. The Miraa export to Somalia was suspended for the last couple of days. One kilo of Miraa is currently sold at around 1,300 of Kenyan Shillings which is equivalent to 10 dollars. The price of Miraa was previously sold at around 700 Kenyan Shillings which was equivalent to 5.43 dollars. The minister responsible for agriculture in Kenya, Mr. Mutahi Kagwe, held a meeting with Miraa export traders and the committee in charge of fixing a specific price of khat, have agreed to double the price of Miraa that is exported to Somalia. According to a press statement issued by the ministry of agriculture stated that the new Miraa price will be effective Saturday 15, 2025. The Somali Khat traders have not so far spoken about Kenya’s increase of the miraa price. It is expected that the increment of the miraa price will put a lot of strain on Somali Khat traders. Kenya has benefited from Khat that it exports to Somalia and it has increased its national budget.
