Helicopter crashes at Mogadishu Airport

The manager of Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority Hon. Ahmed Ma’alin Hassan on Wednesday confirmed that a helicopter plane crashed at Mogadishu Airport. He further revealed that the helicopter was belonging to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

He disclosed that the helicopter plane took off from Baledogle settlement in Lower Shabelle province and crashed at Mogadishu Airport particularly the Afasiyoni section. He said that there were 8 people on board the helicopter. He stated that they cannot confirm their situation as rescue operations are underway to extinguish the fire after the plane caught on fire. He stated that investigations were launched pertaining to the reasons behind the helicopter crash. He said that the airport is currently operating smoothly, but he further stated that at least 600 meters of the airport runway has been sealed off due to the wreckage of the plane.
