Reports from Luuq district in Gedo region on Friday say that armed clashes erupted between two brotherly clans. Eyewitnesses confirmed that fierce fighting was underway in the outskirts of Luuq district for the past couple of hours.
The sound of gunfire could be heard within Luuq district. Reports further confirm that the armed clan militias used all kinds of weapons during the skirmishes. It is reported that there casualties including deaths and injuries.
The inter-clan fighting erupted in Luuq district today follows previous skirmishes that occurred in the district which caused insecurity. The skirmishes broke out due to a row pertaining to the administration of Luuq district as well as previous killings that took place in the district.
The two clans had previously skirmished although a lasting solution has not been reached regarding the conflict. Jubaland officials including the Deputy President of Jubaland Mohamud Sayid Adan failed in his attempts to end the conflict between the two brotherly clans.
Although efforts were made in order to bring the row to an end, the fighting broke out once again unexpectedly which shows that a lasting resolution are not yet reached. Traditional elders in Luuq district have spoken with a loud voice calling the warring sides to bring an end to armed clashes. They warned that the armed clashes will claim lives.
The calls of the traditional elders have not ended the armed confrontations between the two brotherly clans. Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe brought together the warring clans and the two sides agreed to a peace deal and to end the hostilities and animosities between the brotherly clans, but the clashes once again started.
After the peace deal has collapsed, the warring sides have resumed the clashes using the barrel of the gun. It is not yet clear the steps that the Somali Federal Gov’t and Jubaland regional administration will take to resolve the conflict and bring an end to hostilities that is taking place in Luuq district. The growing insecurity and hostilities have caused fear among the local residents in Luuq district. They sent a plea to the gov’t and the warring sides so as to end the armed clashes.
