Mogadishu–Senior officials of the African Union (AU) have announced that Egyptian troops will officially join the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) once all technical and legal preparations are finalized. This is crucial for the resumption of operations. Reports indicate that the Egyptian unit will play a vital role in the fight against Al-Shabab, particularly in strategic settlements in Somalia. According to operational plans, Egyptian troops will be stationed in the Middle Shabelle region, where they will take over security responsibilities and military camps from Burundian troops. The Burundian troops have been stationed in Somalia for over 20 years and have played a crucial role in eliminating Al-Shabab’s presence from many settlements, including Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, and its surrounding areas. AUSSOM officials have stated that the strategic objective of the operation is to strengthen the capability of the Somali Federal Government, reduce the influence of extremist groups, and rebuild the security agencies in Somalia. However, the head of AUSSOM operations has warned of potential obstacles due to lack of finances, stating that the success of the operation will depend on receiving sufficient funds.
