The Committee of clan elders from Awdal strongly dismissed the claim made by Somaliland’s Minister of Interior on February 14, 2026 that peace has been achieved between clans in Awdal and Salel regions. The Committee expressed concern over the minister’s statements, stating that they are misleading and do not reflect the reality on the ground, particularly in areas where hostilities are ongoing. The Committee’s press statement emphasized that the minister’s claim of inter-clan fighting being stopped is far from the truth, as recent skirmishes in western Somaliland have resulted in loss of life and destruction of property. The Committee also refuted the minister’s accusation that the clans from Awdal are responsible for the ongoing animosity. They stated that these accusations are baseless and go against the peaceful coexistence of communities in the region. The Committee also criticized the minister for insulting the traditional elders of Gadabuursi, who have played a crucial role in bringing peace to the region. They reminded the minister that it was the efforts of these elders that led the peace the country is enjoying and became a minister. The Committee also noted a change in the minister’s previous position, where he had acknowledged the peace efforts of traditional elders and government officials. They called on the community and the Somaliland government to work together towards peace and to end the current hostilities. The Committee reaffirmed their commitment to promoting cooperation and stability in the region, and stated that they will continue to play a role in finding peace and unity among the community. In light of the minister’s violation of government norms and loss of neutrality, the Committee announced that they have suspended their cooperation with him. They urged the community and the government to take action towards finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflicts.
