The militant group Al-Shabab reportedly carried out an execution of five men in Jilib town, Southern Somalia, accusing them of being spies for foreign and Somali agencies, according to locals. The group conducted the execution by firing squad in a public square, claiming that the men had given clandestine information to the U.S. government, Jubaland administration, and the Somali Federal government. Al-Shabab, which controls parts of rural areas in Central and South Somalia, regularly carries out these executions, targeting locals living in areas under their control. The group often accuses these individuals of working with Somali government troops or international partners involved in the fight against terrorism. Locals in the region stated that the five people were first presented to the public before being executed by firing squad, a tactic used by the group to intimidate the public and discourage them from working with these officials.
