Reports from Middle Shabelle province say that suspected Al-shabab fighters on Wednesday have taken a full control of Adan Yabaal district after the group launched a pre-dawn attack on a military base housing Somali gov’t troops and local forces.
The attack which began with suicide car bombs followed by a heavy fighting that ensued between Somali National Army (SNA) and Al-shabab fighters.
Reports say that the fierce fighting lasted for about five hours.
Sources confirmed that Al-shabab fighters moved into the town after Somali National Army (SNA) have tactically withdrawn from the district.
Tension is running high and details of the casualties of both sides remain sketchy after the two sides engaged in fierce battle.
Reports say that Somali National Army (SNA) and Ma’awisley forces are currently in the outskirts of Adan Yabaal district.
The Somali troops are regrouping in the area with the intension to return to their military base in Adan Yabaal.
Troops intended to reinforce the Somali troops left from Hiiraan province and others were ferried from Mogadishu who are on their way to the area where the fighting broke out.
Adan Yabal is an ancient town in Middle Shabelle province. The Somali troops captured the district in December, 2022 when the first phase of operations to liberate the Middle Shabelle province was underway.
