Abdirashid Hassan Abdinur (Janan) has fully handed over the forces he commanded in the Beled-Hawo district of the Gedo region to the Jubaland administration, following days of negotiations between him and Jubaland officials.
Local sources confirmed that Janan departed Mandera this morning on a Kenyan military aircraft bound for Nairobi, after the plan to transfer the forces he led in Beled-Hawo was finalized.
Officials, primarily from the Jubaland intelligence services, arrived at the locations previously held by the forces loyal to Abdirashid Janan. These troops had originally been registered with the Federal Government of Somalia during the time Janan served as the commander of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) for the Gedo region.
Videos circulated on social media showed large crowds of civilians welcoming the troops. This move signifies that the Jubaland administration has—after a year and several months—fully taken control of the Beled-Hawo district; the handover occurred without any fighting, and the long-standing tension in the area was resolved through dialogue. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Abdirashid Janan will meet with officials from the Jubaland administration in Nairobi to finalize the preliminary agreement reached by both sides.
So far, the details of the agreement and the specific terms that were settled have not been fully disclosed.
