Leaders of the East African Community (EAC) have approved the appointment of Somali citizen Judge Abdiwahaid Warsame Abdilahi to the First Instance Division of the East African Justice Court. This decision was made during the 25th meeting of the Heads of States of the East Africa, which was held in Arusha, Tanzania and attended by all member states. The meeting was also attended by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other regional leaders, including Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan who hosted the meeting. The Somali Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr. Ilyas Ali Hassan, has welcomed this decision, stating that it is a significant achievement for both Somalia and the East African Community (EAC). He congratulated Judge Abdiwahaid on his appointment and expressed confidence in his abilities to strengthen justice and uphold the law within the community. In 2023, Somalia officially joined the East African Community (EAC) as its 8th member state. This move is seen as a step towards consolidating integration in the region and expanding economic and political cooperation within the EAC. The headquarters of the East African Community is located in Arusha, Tanzania and houses the organization’s justice wing. This court is responsible for resolving conflicts related to the interpretation and implementation of agreements and laws within the organization. It is divided into two divisions: the First Instance Division, which hears cases, and the Appellate Division.
