Colonel Mohamed Abdi Dahir (Mohamed Dhagaweyne), Commander of the 21st Division of the National Army, visited the Xananbuure military camp in the Galgaduud region yesterday afternoon. There, he met with a military unit currently preparing to participate in an upcoming military offensive in Galmudug.
The 21st Division command stated in a release that a military offensive is expected to launch soon in Galmudug areas.
Officers from the 21st Division—headquartered in Dhusamareb—indicate that the troops will soon conduct operations against Al-Shabaab militias in areas where the group is present across the Galgaduud and Mudug regions.
“The commander visited the camp to boost troop morale and assess the ongoing preparations,” said an officer from the 21st Division who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The officer reported that the troops are being readied to take part in a new operation aimed at combating terrorist groups.
While 21st Division officers have refrained from specifying the exact locations targeted for clearing or defending against Al-Shabaab, these developments coincide with a recent influx of Al-Shabaab fighters into areas surrounding the Xarardheere district in the Mudug region. The National Army, Galmudug forces, and previously mobilized local residents stationed in the city have been placed on high alert to counter potential attacks by Al-Shabaab on Harardhere, a town liberated from the group on January 16, 2023.
Preparations are underway in Galmudug State for the repeat election scheduled for the 30th of this month in the Central Regions; this process is also prompting efforts to bolster security in the towns and areas where the vote will take place, ensuring it is conducted in a peaceful environment.
