On Saturday, the Somaliland Police issued orders and directives intended to heighten overall security in the capital. Citizens were informed to abide by these new directives. The police spokesman, Hon. Abdiasis Sheikh Ismail, announced that starting today, all citizens traveling to other regions in the country are required to carry their national identity cards. Local motels and transportation companies that ferry passengers to and from Somaliland regions are instructed to ask for citizens’ national identity cards or driving licenses, or they will have to provide bail. The spokesman also revealed that a specific unit of the police has been given the responsibility to enforce these new orders. He emphasized that both motel owners and transportation companies must verify the identity of their guests and passengers. In addition, on last Thursday, the local council, headed by the Mayor of Hargeisa, Hon. Abdikarim Ahmed Moge, held a meeting with Somaliland’s Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Abdirahman Abdilahi Hassan. The main topic of discussion was how to tighten security in the capital. The chairmen of the districts in the capital were also present at the meeting. The two sides discussed ways to enhance current security measures and the challenges they face. The meeting, which lasted for hours, focused on strengthening cooperation between security agencies and Hargeisa City Hall. They also discussed crucial plans to improve overall security and ensure peace and stability in the capital. Strategic decisions were made to enhance security. In recent weeks, foreign delegations and media practitioners have been pouring into the capital following the historic recognition of Somaliland by Israel.
