The government of the Republic of Somaliland has issued a strong condemnation of recent statements by the Federal Government of Somalia calling for foreign military intervention against Somaliland.
The government emphasized that Somaliland is not under the authority of Mogadishu. It reminded the international community that Somaliland lawfully restored its sovereignty in 1991 within its internationally recognized borders of June 26, 1960, and has since maintained relative peace, stability, and democratic governance.
Somaliland’s statement held the Somali federal government “fully responsible for the consequences of this inflammatory rhetoric” and urged international partners to reject any appeals for military action.
While reaffirming its long-standing commitment to peace, the Somaliland government also made clear that it “reserves its inherent right to self-defense under international law.”
