UN Security Council has welcomed Somalia’s president call for an emergency meeting with the regional state leaders next week over the political impasse.

The Security Council members have called on Somalia’s political stakeholders to urgently convene and resume talks so as to agree on arrangements to hold elections as soon as possible.

The council urged Somalia’s political stakeholders to come to the negotiation table and work together in the interest of the people of Somalia to reach consensus on the arrangements for the conduct of an inclusive elections.

This comes days after Somalia’s president Mohmed Abdilahi Farmajo’s constitutional mandate expired.

Opposition presidential candidates declared that they will not recognize Farmajo as the legitimate president once his term in office expires.

The FGS said in response that Farmajo will remain as the Head of State so long as his replacement will be elected.
