MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Somalia Humanitarian Forum (CHF 2026) concluded in Mogadishu, addressing preparedness for the anticipated impacts of the 2026 “Super El Niño” climate event, early warning systems, and the implementation of urgent measures to mitigate humanitarian risks.
The conference was attended by Federal Government ministers, the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), officials from regional states, humanitarian agencies, international partners, and civil society representatives. Discussions focused on strengthening flood preparedness and response plans, as well as mobilizing humanitarian support. Emphasis was also placed on the importance of conveying early warnings and risk-related information to vulnerable communities, particularly those in remote areas.
Participants underscored the need for close cooperation and coordination among the Federal Government, regional states, and humanitarian agencies to take proactive measures and mitigate the impacts of flooding, displacement, and other humanitarian crises resulting from El Niño. SoDMA Commissioner Mohamud Moallim Abdulle stated that unity and extensive mobilization are required to address the potential risks associated with the 2026 El Niño event.
The Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Ali Yusuf Ali (Hoosh), who concluded the meeting, called upon all stakeholders involved in preparedness and response efforts to fully cooperate with SoDMA.
The Minister noted that SoDMA is the national agency responsible for leading and coordinating disaster management activities, emphasizing the need to align various efforts with a unified plan aimed at mitigating the impact of disasters. with the international community while safeguarding its political interests and sovereignty.
