Regional security forces staged mutiny over unpaid salaries in the capital of northeastern Somalia’s Puntland state on Tuesday and closed main roads.
The soldiers seized security checkpoints in the town of Garowe halting traffic, days after a similar incident had been reported in the central Somali town of Galkayo, where regional troops blocked traffic at a key highway linking the region to the Somali capital Mogadishu.
It comes as Puntland faces pressure from the Somali federal authorities and amid political campaigns by regional parties ahead of an upcoming presidential election.
