A powerful improvised explosive device (IED) was remotely detonated near Ceel-Gaabta, targeting Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s convoy shortly after it left Villa Somalia. The explosion destroyed multiple vehicles in the convoy, leaving several presidential escorts wounded. Despite the devastating attack, the president was unharmed and has since traveled to Middle Shabelle to boost the morale of Somali National Army (SNA) troops.
The attack highlights the increasing security vulnerabilities in Mogadishu, even within the capital’s most fortified areas, and raises concerns over the government’s ability to counter well-planned assassination attempts.
Al-Shabab group has claimed the responsibility of carrying out the explosion that targeted the president’s convoy on his way to the airport.
