The governor of central Somalia’s Hiran region Ali Jayte survived an assassination attempt after a roadside blast targeted his convoy outside the town of Baladweyne, Caasimada Online news website reported on Thursday.
The explosion hit a military vehicle which was part of the governor’s motorcade, killing at least one security official.
The attack came shortly after the governor returned from a visit to the village of Bardhere outside Baladweyne, days after announcing that he would lead operations aimed at dislodging Al-Shabaab from areas in the south of the region.
