EUCAP Somalia flagship project in Puntland, the JMICC – Joint Maritime Information and Coordination Centre – aims at enhancing Puntland’s maritime governance capacity and creating a safe and secure environment. In a nutshell, the project enables communication and information sharing among coastal reporting locations along the extensive Puntland coast and the JMICC in Garowe. It is therefore key for the development and economic exploitation of the vast potential of the ‘Blue Economy’ resources for Puntland and Somalia.

Last Thursday (March 28th), the JMICC reached another milestone.

The Deputy Director-General of the Office of the President, Abdiweli Ali Abdulle, signed the Technical Arrangements for Project JMICC on behalf of the Government of Puntland. The signing took place in the Director JMICC’ Office in Garowe on March 28. Strategic Adviser Marco Hekkens, the Mission Project Manager for the JMICC observed the proceedings together with Mr Guled Ahmed.

Thanks to this important step forward it is now possible to commence the planning for infrastructural enhancements in Garowe and also in other JMICC reporting locations located along the extensive Puntland coast, including Bosasso, Eyl and Garaad.  The improvements range from combined kitchen and toilet blocks to the installation of solar power, a standby generator and electrical refurbishments.

The Arrangement also covers an extensive on the job training programme including Internships with emphasis on the mentoring of the young staff working in the JMICC.

The JMICC end goal, apart from effective Maritime Governance is to further encourage the development and economic exploitation of the vast potential of the ‘Blue Economy’ resources for Puntland and Somalia in a safe and secure maritime environment.
