Local residents on Wednesday have confirmed hearing heavy shelling at the fortified Halane base.
Some of the shells hit at Adden Adde Airport according to initial reports.
Other mortar shells struck near the airport.
It was not immediately clear if the attack caused any casualties.
Warning sirens blared across the airport, indicating a potential security threat.
Security officials have not so far issued a statement regarding the mortar attacks.
The compound houses the African Union Mission, the EU, the United Nations and several foreign diplomatic missions, including the US and UK, which have faced multiple attacks.
No group has claimed the responsibility of carrying out the mortar attack but the al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group of Al-Shabab are behind the attack.
