HARGEISA— Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Irro has appointed Dr. Mohamed Omar Haji Mohamud as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Somaliland to the State of Israel, according to a presidential decree issued on Wednesday. The decree grants the ambassador full authority, status, rights, and responsibilities associated with the position, in accordance with the country’s national constitution. This appointment comes at a pivotal time as Israel and Somaliland have entered into a new era of relations. Reports indicate that the two sides are planning to expand their cooperation in various areas, including politics, trade, water management, and security in the region. Dr. Mohamed Haji previously served as Somaliland’s representative to Taiwan, where he played a key role in strengthening cooperation in development, education, technology, and institutional capacity-building between the two nations. In response to the appointment, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced that the State of Israel has officially accepted the appointment and the diplomatic service of the Somaliland Ambassador, who will be stationed in Israel. An official statement from the foreign ministry stated that this step follows the establishment of diplomatic ties between Israel and Somaliland on December 26, 2025, which was the result of a common understanding reached during the official visit of Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to Somaliland last month. The ministry also noted that Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Haji currently serves as an adviser to the Somaliland President and was one of the key architects in the implementation of Israel and Somaliland’s diplomatic ties in 2025. Israel also revealed that it will soon announce its ambassador to Somaliland, which is another step towards strengthening the strategic cooperation between the two nations.
