In response to an urgent appeal from Somaliland’s President H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) in late November 2025, the Government of Taiwan has delivered 288 metric tons of rice valued at $500,000 to help combat the ongoing drought crisis.

The aid is expected to reach approximately 10,000 vulnerable families struggling with food insecurity as prolonged dry conditions continue to affect over one million people across Somaliland.

Somaliland officials expressed optimism that the donation will spur further international assistance. “It is anticipated that this batch of Taiwan rice will catalyze more support for Somaliland,” according to a statement from the Taiwan Representative Office.

The shipment highlights Taiwan’s commitment to providing direct, on-the-ground humanitarian aid to Somaliland, reflecting deepening bilateral ties. In contrast, critics have accused China of weaponizing aid to exacerbate regional conflicts and destabilize the Horn of Africa.

Distribution of the rice is being managed by Somaliland’s national disaster authorities to ensure swift delivery to affected communities.
