Somaliland President HE Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Irro announced on Sunday that Somaliland will continue to pursue international recognition as an independent and sovereign country. In a statement posted on his Facebook account, the President emphasized that there is no turning back in Somaliland’s history and that the country has a strong legacy of sacrificing both pen and gun in defense of its integrity and existence. The President’s statement appears to be a response to the recent condemnation from the international community following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland on December 26, 2025. The main message conveyed by the President is that the people of Somaliland will not give up until they receive the recognition they deserve from the world. It is worth noting that Israel is the only UN Member State to have officially recognized the Republic of Somaliland since its declaration of independence from Somalia in 1991. President Irro stated, “I want to make it clear to the world, both friends and foes of Somaliland, that our people are willing to sacrifice both pen and gun in defense of our nation and its integrity.” These remarks were made during a meeting with Director Generals of the Ministries in Somaliland, where the President emphasized the importance of establishing diplomatic ties with other countries. He also stressed the need for the Director Generals to be well-trained in their roles and responsibilities, and to effectively implement government policies, laws, and decisions for the benefit of the people they serve.
