In a significant gathering aimed at strengthening the role of the media in nation-building, journalists, editors, and media stakeholders from across Somaliland convened a major national conference in Hargeisa today.
The conference focused on three core themes: leading social unity, safeguarding the core values of Somaliland’s statehood, and advancing the international recognition agenda.
Participants stressed that the media bears a critical responsibility to protect the nation’s interests at all times. They firmly resolved that all forms of media must avoid publishing or broadcasting content that could damage social cohesion or harm the country’s national image.
A strong call was made to uphold the highest standards of journalistic ethics and to exercise utmost caution when reporting on issues that could potentially fuel division or weaken the collective bond among Somalilanders.
According to the Somaliland News Agency (SOLNA), the conference directed television stations, radio outlets, newspapers, and online platforms to actively engage in public awareness initiatives that promote national unity and highlight the country’s broader interests.
The meeting further affirmed that the media should serve as a reliable pillar supporting Somaliland’s national identity and aspirations while steering clear of any material that could undermine fundamental national values.
The conference warmly endorsed recent initiatives by the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) to enhance the professionalism, quality, and accountability of the media sector. Delegates also urged the government to maintain and increase its support for media development, enabling the sector to play a more effective role in educating the public, fostering peace, and protecting the nation’s overall interests.
The event concluded with a renewed pledge from Somaliland’s media community to act as responsible stewards of unity, stability, and progress in the ongoing journey toward international recognition.
